Wells-next-the-Sea HH

About the Heritage Harbour:

Wells-next-the-Sea is a Port on the North Norfolk Coast with a rich maritime history dating back to the 9th century, which has preserved its harbour heritage and still attracts a wide variety of vessels from all over the Uk and Europe.

The Heritage Harbour project, launched by the Wells Harbour Commissioners (formed in 1663, celebrating their 360th anniversary) aims to maintain this special character.

Maritime Visitor Attractions:

Examples of historic buildings include the old lifeboat house now the Harbour Office, Old Custom House, Granary, several maltings, reminders of shipyards and ropewalks, old inns and pubs, fishermen’s jetties and slipways, plus - more recently - a maritime sound pod in the old tide recorder station and the famous beach huts with links to the pinewoods, saltmarshes and the Holkham Hall & Estate

A Visitor Information Centre (open daily 10am to 4pm), and the Wells Heritage Centre, are available at Wells Maltings.

In the Past:

Historic features, such as the Quayside and old Haven have survived and are easily accessible at the heart of a town which grew over the centuries through the export of grain and malt, the import of coal, fertiliser and animal feed and as a thriving fishing port. Although commercial cargoes ended in the early 1990s, historic vessels continue to use the Port. Around the main Quayside the old town bears witness to its maritime importance and many sites have associations with famous seafarers including Admiral Lord Nelson, Sir John Smeaton, Sir Cloudesley Shovell, and John Fryer, sailing master on the “Bounty”.

Now and the Future:

The aim of the Heritage Harbour project, led by Wells Harbour Commissioners is to promote and preserve the local historic waterfront buildings, quayside, land, structures, maritime facilities and support historic vessels such as the restored lifeboat and Dunkirk veteran - Lucy Lavers -which offers passenger trips and the old traditional fishing vessels that explore creeks and marshes by Coastal Exploration Co.

The Heritage Harbour is a partnership project involving these and other local groups interested in promoting the Port's and town’s maritime history and its local environment, helping to boost local businesses such as the hospitality & tourism sector through display of local artefacts, photographs and education with the creation of an audio maritime walking trail.
